Fun cartoon explains study showing that rotating corn with soybeans reduces nitrate leaching risk

It would be fun if every research study article had a cartoon explaining the results like this new one from the team at Iowa State University. Scroll down a bit to see the cartoon....and click on it for a larger view.

The study showed that rotating corn with soybean allows for a greater environmental buffer than continuous corn as to impact of N rates above agronomic optimum for grain yield on NO3-N leaching. Not that anyone wants to apply excess N.

I’ll ask TopYield.Ag network scientist Mike Castellano and co-author on this article to explain questions not covered in the cartoon!

I’m wondering how these results would be influenced by cover crops or no-till?
